What is Snail Mucin?

What is Snail Mucin?

Snail mucin is another name for snail secretion filtrate! (Eeek, we know!) Or snail slime (that doesn't make it any better), which is an animal-derived growth factor. Growth factors are high molecular weight peptides that encourages wound healing and tissue repair.

A number of research studies have demonstrated that snail mucin can significantly increase the rate of wound healing. This healing effect appears to be due to the complex chemical composition of snail mucin and its ability to increase the production of new skin cells, prevent the death of existing skin cells and enable the movement of skin cells to the wound site - not many products can claim to produce, prevent and move cells around like this snail juice does!

What does snail Mucin do for my skin?

Based on its chemical composition, snail mucin may be an effective treatment of poorly healing wounds, unsightly scars, fine lines and wrinkles, dehydrated and dry skin, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, pos inflammatory erythema, acne and enlarged pores.

The fact that snail mucin is a growth factor that contains allantoin, glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, and antibacterial agents means that it may possess a number of skin benefits in theory.

Based on this research, some of the ways in which snail mucin can benefit your skin are:

  • Reducing fine lines and wrinkles

  • Reducing pigmentation

  • Reducing post inflammatory erythema

  • Increasing skin hydration and stratum corneum barrier function

  • Reducing enlarged pores

"Snail mucin has been used since ancient times for its skin healing benefits."

More recent research has highlighted the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumoral effects of snail mucin, which suggests that it has a broader range of benefits for the skin.

Does it really work?

"Chilean snail farmers were experiencing soft and smooth hands after regularly handling snails for the French food market. Not only were their hands smoother and softer, but any wounds or grazes appeared to heal faster with no scarring. This led to the first snail mucin-based skincare brand."

It is no surprise that snail mucin can be found in a number of cosmetic products nowadays and offers a wide variety of skin benefits. There is good reason for why this is happening, it has worked for a lot of people. In saying that, like with everything good in life, it is about consistency. You must be willing to trial it out for a good length of time to see results. It is a skin-vest-ment (try different products, stronger formulas etc) to get really strong results for your skin, snail slime seems worth a try as much as any other high protein-based moisturizers. What do you have to lose? Snail slime products like we havein store is quite affordable and it's proven benefits for your skin is worth a go!

When do I add it into my routine?

After cleanser and toner and before any serums / moisturiser. Apply a small amount on your face and use your finger tips to press it down for better absorption. It actually feels quite nice and soothing... or maybe we're just sickos!

Summarise it for me, baby!

Snail Mucin retains moisture and support cell regeneration, repairs damaged skin and supports skins resilience. Its benefits are that it is moisturising, healing and soothing.

It is best for those with Dry, Combination, Oily and Acne Prone skin. Skin concerns it helps are acne, hyperpigmentation and uneven texture.

It is worth a shot if you really want to work on reducing those acne scars - just make sure you're buying good quality snail slime and don't buy the cheap 'over-hyped' stuff!

Got Strawberry Skin on your arms and legs?

Harmless but annoying, 'strawberry skin' usually arises after shaving or some form of hair removal that exposes the hair follicle or a clogged pore to oxidization (thereby turning it dark). It could also be an excess buildup of skin or keratin around the hair follicle (i.e. keratosis pilaris).Honing in on what triggers it for you is the key to preventing it in the future - along with the right skincare routine.
