Beauty of Joseon is what happens when traditional Korean medicine (also known as Hanbang) meets clean skincare. It’s inspired by women of the Joseon Dynasty, the royal ruling family of Korea for over 500 years until 1910. Apart from establishing Korea’s modern capital Seoul and inventing hangul (the Korean script), the court was also famous for the beauty standards of its women. Joseon women famously shunned ostentatious beauty routines in favour of disciplined skincare using natural ingredients. Joseon women pretty much personified the “skin first, makeup second” movement before anyone! And this is the essence of brand Beauty of Joseon: with elegant, holistic and effective formulas, it’s little wonder it has earned a legion of diehard fans (with Kanvas Beauty among them!).
It’s not every day you find a moisturizer with a cult following! But then again, the Dynasty Cream is no ordinary lotion. What exactly is a Dynasty Cream? Although it may conjure up images of Joan Collins and Linda Evans, this facial hydrator from Beauty of Joseon employs a 200-year-old traditional Korean Hanbangformula designed to deliver powerful anti-ageing benefits. It blends natural ingredients such as ginseng and honey to brighten and tighten skin for a more youthful complexion. If you want a deep dive into its ingredients and performance on combination skin, check out this Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream Review here.
This cream recently underwent a revamp, with the new addition to the formula being rice water. It’s supposedly even more gentle on sensitive-skin and is fast generating rave reviews. One of our favourite things about this cream is its dense, sort-of “chewy” texture, making it more interesting than your standard moisturizer! The Dynasty Cream is easy to use too - simply massage it gently onto dry skin for around 30 seconds, and finish by tapping lightly to aid absorption.
Move over classics, there's a new kid on the block and she's in demand! Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun Probiotics Sun Essence was an instant hit as soon as it launched. Offering SPF50+ PA++++ protection, it's a chemical formula that seems to sit right on almost every skin type. It's lightweight, moisturizing but not oily, and gives off the perfect amount of dewy. Plus, it doesn't leave a cast on darker skin tones!
Those aren't the only plus points. The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun's formula is stellar. It blends a 30% concentration of rice extract with niacinamide and fermented ingredients, making it ideal for sensitive skin, as well as for those that like gentle brightening in every layer of their skincare. We've tried it and the hype is real - just check out its reviews.
We know this one is going to join Beauty of Joseon's cult pantheon in no time! The brand's new Revive Ginseng & Retinal (2%) Eye Serum combines one of hanbang's favourite anti-ageing ingredients (ginseng root) with a vitamin A derivative. Retinal (with an 'a') is very similar to retinol and will lead to the same results - however, retinal purports to do it quicker, with a much higher exfoliation rate than standard retinol. You'd think, therefore, that this is one solely for experienced retinol users given the faster skin cell turnover rate (increasing the risk of irritation. But it's still surprisingly gentle and hydrating, while delivering excellent results. We've heard reviewers call it the affordable dup to Medik8's Crystal Retinal 3. If you're noticing fine lines around the eye contour area, this retinal serum is deinitely worth a try.
Don’t let zits get in the way of your glow game! This honey-coloured bottle is probably the brand’s most popular serum (and we’ve never met a Beauty of Joseon serum we didn’t love). The Glow Serum from Beauty of Joseon is specifically designed to soothe inflammation, improve cell turnover and help fade acne scars. The thick but easily absorbed formula is infused with propolis, a natural antiseptic. The other key ingredient is niacinamide (2%), which boasts its own pimple-fighting prowess. Together with antioxidant-rich turmeric, it’ll even out your skin tone and fade blemishes. We tried it, and found it surprisingly hydrating - making it a great complement to harsh anti-acne treatments and prescription retinoids. Check out our Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum review here (with ultra HD texture shots for your viewing pleasure!).
The Repair Serum from Beauty Of Joseon (now known as The Revive Serum) is a luxurious, silky potion of ginseng, licorice root, matsutake mushroom, and of course snail mucin filtrate. The latter evens out skin tone, reduces hyperpigmentation and also improves skin cell turnover. Meanwhile, antioxidant-rich ginseng root water supports circulation to help plump up areas with fine lines and wrinkles. If you want to know more, check out the Beauty of Joseon Repair Serum reviews on this Asian Beauty reddit thread. As a general rule however, we would reach for this after exfoliating, scrubbing or masking.
Okay, random analogy time! If you’re a boxer, you’d know that a punch combination is usually way more effective than a single punch (unless you have a killer right hand). The same can be said for skincare. Usually, it’s the right combination of products and ingredients that delivers the best results - instead of counting on a single product to do it all. Beauty of Joseon highly recommends using the Repair Serum after its Green Plum Toner for a visible difference in your skin quality. Also known as the Pure Cloud Bubble Toner, it removes impurities, dead skin cells and sebum. It also improves skin’s ability to absorb the nutrition-rich Repair Serum, which will restore your skin’s hydration after chemical exfoliation.
Damaged skin barrier from overusing active ingredients? Or looking for something to calm redness? Reach for the Calming Serum from Beauty of Joseon. Rounding out Beauty of Joseon’s Hanbang Trio, this lightweight, herbal and anti-oxidant rich formula targets red patches and soothes irritated skin. The key ingredients here are 76.5% green tea leaf water and 2% panthenol, both of which work beautifully on inflammation. Because it’s fragrance-free and made with only the cleanest of ingredients (check out its scorecard on COSDNA), it’s safe to use on rosacea and hypersensitive skin. A personal favourite of the Kanvas Beauty team, Beauty of Joseon's Radiance Cleansing Balm feels and works like a high-end product (but isn't priced like one, don't worry)! The sherbet formula uses brightening rice water and fermented grains to remove absolutely everything, from stubborn makeup to excess sebum. It's a luxurious experience, from the way it melts like butter in the sun upon contact with skin, to the residue-free finish. And it’s worth adding that one jar lasts for ages. In fact, we’d bet that if you’re not a double fan of double cleansing, this balm will convert you. It’s one of those products that you feel weirdly excited to use! If you're new to using an essence, this Beauty of Joseon Essence is the perfect introduction! It suits virtually any skin type - oily, mature, dehydrated, you name it. Infused with 80% ginseng root water, 2% niacinamide and 0.04% adenosine, it will pretty much do it all: moisturize, brighten, leave skin plumped, regulate sebum and help repair a broken skin barrier. If you have dry skin, layer over a hydrating toner and follow up with the Joseon Repair or Glow serum. Oilier skin won’t require as much layering. With a pH of 5.8, it’s mildly acidic and matches that of your skin – so it shouldn’t irritate sensitive skin. And because the formula is fairly simple, this essence will match well with actives – including vitamin C and retinol.
The Beauty of Joseon Peeling Gel is a gentle exfoliator that uses the active enzymes of apricots and apple to remove dead surface skin cells, unclog pores and leave your skin smooth like a baby’s bottom. It’s fun to use, with a jelly-like texture that reminds us of those jelly cups we'd eat in preschool. And it smells mildly fruity as well! But the fragrance is not overpowering and dissipates quickly. If you find your skin too sensitive for stronger chemical exfoliants or physical scrubs, try the Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel instead. While the brand instructs you to apply it on dry skin, you can also apply it on damp skin if your skin starts feeling too tight. All you need is a twice weekly application for Beauty of Joseon’s Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel to make a subtle but notable difference to your skin's appearance and texture.
Q: Is Beauty of Joseon cruelty-free?
A: Beauty of Joseon is 100% cruelty-free. While Korea has banned cosmetic testing on animals, Korean brands selling within China are required by the Chinese government to test their products. Hence, some Korean brands still test on animals where required by its international markets. Fortunately however, Beauty of Joseon is not one of them.
Q: Is Beauty of Joseon Vegan?
A: Although Beauty of Joseon is cruelty-free, it isn’t certified vegan. With that said, Beauty of Joseon offers vegan-friendly products, including its popular Green Plum AHA Toner and Ginseng Essence.
Q: Is Beauty of Joseon clean?
A: While there’s no universal definition of clean, we’d venture to say that by most standards (including by Kanvas Beauty’s own definition), Beauty of Joseon is a clean beauty brand. You won’t find any parabens, sulfates, dyes, artificial fragrances or drying alcohols in its formulas.
Q: Is Beauty of Joseon eco-friendly?
A: In an interview with Skinsider, Beauty of Joseon described the lifestyle of Joseon as ‘practical’ and ‘eco-friendly’, both of which qualities the brand tries to emulate. This means glass recyclable bottles, plain paper labels and recyclable cardboard boxes.
We are especially excited about Joseon’s Glow Deep Serum, which boasts an amazing brightening formula of 2% arbutin and 68.6% rice bran water. Not surprisingly, that sold out within its first week on Kanvas!
