Blackhead Skin Care Products
If we had to name some of the most annoying things we could think of, we’d say: stepping on a wet floor with socks on; running into an ex while extremely hungover; aaand blackheads. Definitely blackheads. Thankfully, there are quick ways of dealing with blackheads (also known as comedones): From blackhead remover creams and pore-sucking clay masks, to gritty facial cleansers and exfoliating toners - blackhead removal has become quite an art these days. Yep, we watch those gross but oh-so-fascinating squeeze clips on IG as well!

Tackling blackheads
One of the best ways to deal with blackheads is to tackle the cause. Basically, each of your pores contain a sebaceous gland (i.e. the thing that produces oil to keep our skin soft and our barrier strong). Like a bad flatmate taking up all the space with their junk, sometimes a sebaceous gland can overreact and produce too much oil, attracting dead skin and clogging the pore to produce a blackhead. There’s a number of reasons why your oil-producing glands might be going H.A.M.: it could be stress due to hormonal changes, the general environment or a reaction to harsh skincare. For example, if your skincare is too drying, your skin may think it needs to compensate by pumping out more oil (thereby producing more blackheads). It might sound counter-intuitive, but some of the best products for blackheads are actually quite hydrating to prevent your oil glands from taking corrective action.
Blackheads form when a hair follicle in the skin becomes clogged or plugged.
What’s first?
So, the first thing to do is to figure out what the cause may be, and to rebalance your skin by adjusting your routine. Unless you have an absolutely massive one that looks concerning, blackheads for the most part are harmless and don’t usually require a dermatologist’s attention. If it's simly a case of your hormones waking up a choosing mayhem, you might want to introduce a blackhead removal mask such as this popular clay formula, or use an acid-based / BHA toner to unplug your pores. In addition, ingredients like niacinamide and retinol are highly effective at balancing out excess sebum and shrinking the appearance of pores, as are herbs such as Mugwort and Coptis Japonica root.
Ingredients to try
01.
Salicylic Acid Salicylic acid is pretty much the go-to ingredient for killing blackheads. This BHA is effective because it gets deep into the pores to unclog, remove excess sebum and exfoliate dead skin cells. It works almost immediately, and is safe enough to use daily or 2-3x per week. For the best results, try using it in a toner or essence, such as the BHA Blackhead Power Liquid from COSRX. If you find BHA toners too drying or if your skin is sensitive, opt for a salicylic acid cleanser instead. We love Some By Mi’s Miracle Bye Bye 30 Days Blackhead Green Tea Tox Bubble Cleanser (long name, we know). You can also try the gentler Aloe BHA Skin Toner from Benton if your skin is on the dry side.

02.
Retinol Retinol is an excellent ingredient to eliminate blackheads. Apart from speeding up skin cell turnover, it is a pro at regulating excess sebum. It is also the only skincare ingredient clinically proven to reduce pore size, eliminating its overall appearance. Little wonder it’s such a popular ingredient! Try SVR’s Vitamin A Ampoule, or if you’re a retinol beginner and want to reduce the risk of newbie irritation, start with the ultra-gentle Retinol Cica Repair Ampoule from Innisfree.
03.
Bakuchiol If you’re after a vegan alternative to retinol, try bakuchiol. It has similar keratolytic properties to retinol, but doesn’t produce the side effects of redness and irritation on sensitive skin. It’ll help unclog pores as well as smoothen rough skin texture. And as the cherry on top, it’ll also reduce fine lines and gently brighten skin! Why not indeed. One of our favourite bakuchiol serums for congestion and blackheads is Acure’s Dual Phase Bakuchiol Serum. Users report a more even skin tone and more refined pores. Another is Neogen’s Bakuchiol Serum (which is an affordable dupe to Medik8’s version).
04.
Clay Masks If your blackheads are caused by very oily skin, then reach for a good clay mask. There are various types of clay out there, but they all carry the same superior ability to absorb sebum and draw out impurities from the skin. Therefore, it's really about finding the one that gels best with you. Clay masks will also help reduce the shine factor, leaving your skin with a mattified finish. Best of all, you don’t need to apply it often – just once a week is enough to see a difference over time! When it comes to which one you should use, you’re spoiled for choice: sensitive skin will love Purito’s Bentolin Pore Clay Mask with a clean and simple formulation. Skin prone to redness can’t go past ISNTREE’s Real Mugwort Clay Mask. Not only does mugwort aid hormonal impacts, but it is also beneficial for flushing and rosacea. And, if you’re after super-absorbing powers, try the popular all-rounder: the Pore Clearing Clay Mask 2X from Innisfree.
